Thread, a low-power and low-latency mesh networking protocol that facilitates local communication between smart devices, has announced a groundbreaking feature known as Thread Direct. This new capability allows users to onboard Thread-compatible devices, such as smart plugs and locks, without the need for a Thread border router. Instead, all that is required is a mobile device equipped with a Thread radio, making the setup process significantly more accessible.
Currently, various smartphones, including many iPhones, the latest Samsung flagships, and modern Pixel models, are equipped with Thread radios. This advancement is part of Thread's commitment to enhancing the smart home experience, particularly in conjunction with Matter, the interoperability standard that aims to unify smart home devices. With Thread Direct, users can expect a more seamless integration of their smart home products, simplifying what has often been a cumbersome onboarding process.
