The US Department of Defense faces the annual task of compiling a multitude of reports required by Congress, covering a wide range of national security issues. Recently, Pentagon officials have begun to embrace a new method to tackle this workload: the use of generative AI tools. During a recent event at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC, Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael showcased AI-generated reports as a prime example of the Department of Defense's commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology.

Since December 2025, the Pentagon has made generative AI tools accessible to personnel across all six military branches through its customized GenAI.mil platform, starting with Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government. Michael emphasized the efficiency of this approach, stating, "I have to report to Congress every year on this thing. Let me load all the papers onto it and have it draft me a congressional report that would otherwise take 200 hours of staffing time and do it in five hours." This initiative not only streamlines the reporting process but also reflects the Pentagon's ongoing efforts to integrate advanced technologies into its operations.
