Mobileye, a leading driving technology firm, is gearing up to enter the US robotaxi market with a new standalone service set to debut in 2027. The exact city for the launch remains under wraps, but the initiative promises to be a vertically integrated solution, utilizing Mobileye's own Moovit mobility platform. This platform will facilitate ride bookings and driver coordination, enhancing the user experience for passengers.
The Israeli company, acquired by Intel in 2017 and later going public in 2022, plans to kick off the service with a fleet of approximately 100 robotaxis early next year. "Mobileye has spent more than two decades building the technologies required for autonomous driving," stated Amnon Shashua, the founder and CEO of Mobileye. "Today we are taking the next step: combining those technologies with operational ownership to create a financially and geographically scalable robotaxi business designed from the ground up for global deployment."
Mobileye gained significant recognition in the mid-2010s when Tesla incorporated its advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) into its Autopilot feature. However, their partnership ended in 2016 due to concerns over the misrepresentation of driver assistance as fully autonomous driving technology. Since then, Mobileye has continued to forge partnerships and develop its technologies in the realm of ADAS and autonomous vehicles, steadily moving toward its ambitious robotaxi goals.
