The analysis of World Cup performances reveals a significant trend in favor of democratic nations. Historically, authoritarian countries have leveraged the tournament for propaganda, but the data indicates that democracies have come to dominate both participation and success since the mid-20th century.
Как это работало
Researching the outcomes of the World Cup from 1930 to 2018, I utilized Polity data and Freedom House rankings to categorize countries based on their political systems. This involved identifying winning and finalist nations across different political regimes, revealing that democracies have consistently outperformed autocracies in the tournament since 1966, when England defeated West Germany.
Результат
From 1982 to 2018, all winning countries were democracies. In total, 71.4% of finalists from 1930 to 2018 were democracies, and since 1966, only two authoritarian nations have won. As of the 2018 tournament, democracies comprised nearly 60% of global nations, while autocratic states dwindled to 12%. The upcoming 2026 World Cup is expected to feature 43.1% free nations, a stark contrast to the data from 1974.
Почему это важно для тебя
This trend suggests that as democratic nations continue to thrive in the World Cup, it may also reflect their broader resilience and appeal on the global stage. For businesses and organizations, aligning with democratic values and promoting human rights can foster positive public perception and support, especially in a world where sports can serve as a platform for political messaging.
